southbend s series range installation

If you have purchased a new Southbend S Series range and want to know it’s installation process, here is a guide for you. Installing a Southbend range is not at all a hard task. However, you should be careful to tighten gas connections well to avoid leaks and know some safety instructions. This blog takes you through the steps of Southbend S Series range installation. Have a look at the following sections to get the job done properly.

Southbend S Series Range Installation Guide

It is recommended that your range needs to be installed under a ventilation hood. Any problem with the improper ventilation will not be covered under warranty.

Unpacking

  1. You should examine all containers for damage before and during unpacking.
  2. Cut the banding straps and remove the corrugated cardboard surrounding the S series range. If the legs were shipped in the same package, keep them aside to install later.
  3. Make sure, do not remove any tags and labels attached to the unit until your range is working properly.
  4. Keep aside the flue riser and shelf assembly to install later.
  5. Next, unbolt the shipping hold-down brackets from the skid and then remove the brackets from the range. Replace the bolt back into the threaded holes in the Southbend range.

If the range is to be installed on legs

You will get a set of four legs along with a range ordered with legs. A threaded leg pad needs to be fastened to the range base frame at each corner. Each leg has a corresponding mating thread. You can adjust the legs to overcome a slightly uneven floor.

  • Raise your range unit sufficiently to allow all legs to be attached. For safety, you will shore up and provide support the unit with an adequate blocking arrangement strong enough to support the load.
  • Next, screw the legs into the holes in the center of the leg pads. These legs should be fully screwed into the leg pads.
  • Push the lower range carefully onto a level surface.
  • You can check with a level to make sure that your range surface is level. Each leg of the unit can screw in or out to lower/ raise each corner.

If the range is to be installed on casters

When you order your range with casters, you will receive a pack of four casters along with the unit. The installation process of legs and casters is the same. So, you can refer to the above section to know how to install these casters.

Attach Restraint

  • Attach the restraining device bracket to a wall stud which is located near to the unit connector inlet as well as outlet connections. You can use four #12 screws and plastic anchors if needed.
  • Next, install an eye bolt to a frame member on the rear of the equipment. Check for adequate clearance carefully behind the frame member. If it is ok, drill a 1/4 inch or 6 mm hole through the frame member.
  • Thread hex nut and slide the washer onto the eye bolt. Eyebolt needs to be inserted through the 1/4" drilled hole and secure with a washer and nylon lock nut.
  • After that, with a cable clamp, you have to adjust the restraining extended length of the appliance to prevent over-bending or kinking of the appliance connector.

Attach Flue Riser and Shelf Assembly

  • Place the flue riser assembly on the above top of the range.
  • Slide the assembly over the bayonets until it bottoms out as shown in the diagram in the manual.
  • Now, tighten the ends of the flue riser assembly with two 1/4-20 x 3/4 head bolts, flat washers, and lock washers.
  • If you ordered shelf assembly also, attach it to the riser assembly with 1/4-20 x 3/4 head bolts, lock washers, and flat washers.

Electrical Connection

Be sure that the input voltage and phase match the specifications given on the serial plate.

Southbend S Series ranges are equipped either with a power cord or two-pole terminal blocks that are located behind the cover plate (located on the rear of the range).

To connect supply wires, first, remove the appropriate cover plate and route supply wires and grounding wire through the strain relief fitting to the terminal block.

Insert the supply wires one each into the terminal block two poles and tighten the screws. Place the ground wire into the grounding lug and secure the screw. Make sure to reattach the cover plate.

Gas Connection

  • Find the serial plate which is located on the interior side of the kick panel below the oven. It indicates the type of gas that is suitable for your range burn. Check whether it is a natural gas or propane gas.
  • For natural gas, the regulator is set to deliver gas at 0.99 kPa (4” W.C.) pressure to the manifold. For propane gas, set it to 2.48 kPa (10” W.C.).
  • The gas supply line to the range should not be smaller than the inside diameter of the pipes to which it is connected.
  • Clean the supply line if it has dust, dirt, etc. before connecting to the range.

Verify the Installation

Once you have done the installation, you need to verify the range as follows:

  • Check that all screws and bolts are tightened.
  • Verify the electrical and gas connections have been correct.
  • Check the level of the range. If it is not leveled, adjust the legs or casters.
  • Confirm that the minimum clearances are satisfied.
  • See if the oven door is open and close properly.
  • Check that there is enough space in front of the unit to open the oven door.
  • Wipe clean all surfaces.
  • Finally, verify the Southbend S Series range operation.

Final Words

However, one should read the Southbend range installation instructions before attempting the installation. Moreover, it should be done by a qualified technician to get the manufacturer's limited warranty. For further more safety instructions, you can refer to the Southbend range manual.
